The Georgia Department of Defense is looking for a State Attorney to work in the Office of the State Judge Advocate at Clay National Guard Center in Marietta, GA. Due to our unique dual federal and state roles, the purpose of this position is to provide specific state law subject matter expertise.

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Coordinating litigation and requests for assistance with the Georgia Department of Law;
  • Reviewing and drafting legislation, as well as contracts;
  • Researching statutes, rules and the common law;
  • Interpreting and reviewing proposed policies, procedures, and rules;
  • Working on real estate matters;
  • Providing guidance on Georgia Open Records Act and Open Meetings Act issues,
  • Providing guidance on employment matters;
  • Representing agency in administrative hearings or as a client to the Department of Law.

Agency Specific Qualifications and/or Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to those applicants who, in addition to meeting the minimum qualifications have a military background or are currently serving in the military so that they may better understand the mission of the Georgia Department of Defense.

1. Eligibility to work in the U.S.
2. Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
3. A negative pre-employment drug test (post-hire the selected candidate will be placed in the pool for the State Random Drug Testing Program).

***A Georgia criminal records check will be conducted before an offer of employment is made. A national criminal records check is required post-hire as part of a federal background investigation (NACI) in order to gain access to Ga DOD facilities and computer networks.

Juris Doctorate from an accredited college or university AND license to practice law in the State of Georgia OR eligibility to sit for the next Georgia Bar examination OR reciprocity AND One year of relevant legal experience OR One year of experience required at the lower level Attorney 1 (LEP020).
