The Georgia Department of Defense is seeking a certified professional educator to join the staff of our highly successful Peach State STARBASE (PSS) program. Peach State STARBASE (PSS) is headquartered at the Clay National Guard Center in Marietta, Georgia, and provides exciting, dynamic and interesting Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) lessons and activities, primarily to at-risk students from selected Title I public schools in the Atlanta metro area, in both direct support and as adjunctive instruction to their regular school curriculum. PSS hosts up to 2,200 5th Grade students on campus, an additional 400 6th-8th Grade in their middles school during the school year, and approximately 200 day campers during the summer months..

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Instructing 5th to 8th grade level classes in science, math, engineering, aerospace, and other STARBASE topics from prepared lesson plans to established standards in a fast-paced, high energy atmosphere;
  • Working with other STARBASE instructors to model and teach directly and by inference high levels of cooperation and communication between team members;
  • Promote and present a positive view of good citizenship, general educational goals, higher education, the military, and the civilian work force;
  • Assisting other STARBASE staff members in physical security of assigned spaces and facilities; inventorying, indexing, ordering, and storing supplies, equipment and materials; and maintaining good orderliness and cleanliness of STARBASE spaces and facilities;
  • Maintaining all certifications/licensure required by PSS.
  • Attending internal and external educational programs and professional meetings that meet the requirements for continuing education in the assigned specialty area.
  • Reading professional literature and translating complex or technical information into a meaningful format that may be understood by others.

The selected candidates must have the ability to do the following:

  • Become proficient to a high level with and demonstrate the ability to effectively teach 3D CAD programs, 3D printer technologies, digital based scientific instrumentation, tablet based teaching tools, flight simulation, drone/quadcopter technologies, model rocketry, and all other disciplines, technologies, techniques and modalities contained in both the DoD STARBASE curriculum and location based lesson plans and activities.
  • Create a positive learning environment in the classroom, through effective use of teaching techniques, disciplinary techniques, and ability-based presentations.
  • Conduct first level student discipline, with the goal of rapidly correcting unacceptable behaviors and keeping the students engaged in the classroom.

Preference will be given to those applicants who, in addition to meeting the entry level qualifications, have current and significant professional level experience in any combination of the following:

  • Prior or current National Guard or Reserve military service; or a military retiree or veteran from any branch.
  • BS/BA or higher degree in a STEM field;
  • Master Teacher or equivalent state status;
  • Teaching certification in a STEM field;
  • Experience in educational administration, and/or long sustained (over ten years) direct professional experience with early childhood or middle school education.
  • Fluent in Spanish.

The selected applicant must pass a pre-employment background investigation, which includes a Georgia and national criminal records search, a pre-employment drug test (post-hire will be placed in the pool for the State Random Drug Testing Program) AND a post-employment federal background investigation.
