Job Summary

The Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE)- School Improvement is recruiting for a Special Education Support Specialist. Under direct supervision of the School and District Improvement Area Program Manager, this position provides leadership, coaching, professional learning and support to federally identified schools/districts with students with disabilities. The subgroup performance in the bottom 5% of schools in the state, ensuring policies, procedures and practices comply with federal regulations and state rules. The job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Description of Duties:

  • Implement High-Leverage Practices in Special Education and other effective instructional practices
  • Assist in continuous improvement as it relates to students with disabilities, and development and administration of statewide special education programs and mandates
  • Provide oversight and support for local education agencies for special education and the intersection of Section 504
  • Must also be able to prepare guidelines, memoranda, reports, and presentation materials
  • Personnel must be able to complete required job duties with limited supervision
  • Provide coaching and support to local districts and schools

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to applicants who, in addition to meeting the minimum qualifications, possess one or more of the following:

  • Experience in staff development/professional learning for special education and general education
  • Experience supporting continuous improvement
  • Experience in data analysis and effective use
  • Strong knowledge of evidence-based practices and the implementation and monitoring of evidence-based practices with fidelity
  • Leadership experience at the school, district or state level (Minimum of three years)
  • Georgia professional educator certification in special education or related areas such as school psychology
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills
  • Excellent presentation skills

This posting is for one position: McDonough, Henry County. This position will be field based but statewide travel may be required.

Master's degree in education or a related field from an accredited college or university AND Five years of related experience OR Bachelor's degree in education or a related field from an accredited college or university AND Seven years of related experience.
