Job Summary

The Georgia Department of Education - Federal Programs is recruiting for a Federal Compliance Accounting Specialist. Under general supervision and in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting. Principles (GAAP), the incumbent performs professional accounting duties such as preparation of financial statements and various accounting reports and provides information to auditors and third parties about federally funded education grant programs. Additionally, in coordination with the Office of Federal Programs, this position supports local educational agencies (LEA) consolidating federal funds in Title I schoolwide programs. Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

Job Responsibilities

Researching and documenting accounting procedures and policies which integrate GAAP, Governmental Auditing Standards, statutory accounting and fiscal requirements applicable to local educational agencies

  • Reviewing audit reports and following up on corrective action plans, identifying improvements in the methods for recording, maintaining, and reporting financial and budgetary data of local education agencies
  • Assisting with federal transparency reporting and federal grant monitoring
  • Assisting Accounting Manager with federal reporting requirements
  • Providing professional guidance and assistance in the solution of complex accounting and financial issues, including the accounting of consolidated funds, affecting local educational agencies
  • Providing ad-hoc research and analysis for management, as well as, providing analysis of key federal reporting data
  • Analyzing accounting data and transactions to ensure accuracy, analyzing, recording and interpreting federal financial transactions
  • Preparing specialized and standard accounting reports and providing information to internal and external third parties.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must have a good working knowledge of interpreting, creating, and managing spreadsheet applications
  • Experience with financial statements
  • Experience with K-12/local school system accounting
  • Experience in governmental accounting and auditing
  • Experience with federal funds, Uniform Grant Guidance, and Code of Federal Regulations
  • Strong computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Access, and PowerPoint) with emphasis on Excel

  • Experience with Uniform Grant Guidance and Code of Federal Regulations

Bachelor's degree in accounting and three (3) years of professional accounting job-related experience; or two (2) years of experience at the lower level Accountant 3 (FIP022) or equivalent position.
