The mission of the Department of Law is to serve the citizens of the State of Georgia by providing legal representation of the highest quality to the agencies, officers and employees of state government and by honorably and vigorously carrying out the constitutional and statutory responsibilities of the Attorney General. The Department of Law is organized into the Executive Office, five legal divisions, four specialty units and an operations division. The position filled through this announcement will serve in the Environmental and Natural Resources Section of the Regulated Industries and Professions Division.
Job Title: Assistant Attorney General
Job Summary
Attorneys in this Section provide advice to and representation of the Environmental Protection Division, Department of Natural Resources, Department of Agriculture, Coastal Resources Division, Forestry Commission, Soil and Water Conservation Commission and Peanut Commission (among others) in the Office of State Administrative Hearings and in state and federal courts.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
1) Represent client agencies in litigation:
a) Try cases, present evidence, and argue motions and appeals in administrative hearings and state and federal courts;
b) Research and prepare pleadings, motions and briefs;
c) Prepare witnesses, including expert witnesses, for hearings and depositions;
d) Participate in settlement negotiations;
e) Manage discovery.
2) Provide legal advice to client agencies, including researching and drafting memoranda of advice.
3) Research pertinent legal issues; keep abreast of recent legal developments.
4) Draft formal opinions in response to legal questions.
5) Respond to inquiries from citizens, legislators, and judges
6) Attend client, board, departmental, and division meetings as required.
7) Attend continuing legal education seminars as required; may make presentations at same.
8) Travel, as required by the position
9) Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited law school and a Member of the Georgia Bar
Preferred Qualifications
Preference will be given to applicants who possess one or more of the items below:
· 3-5 years litigation experience
· Administrative law and/or environmental law background
· Excellent writing skills
