Tax Accountant - Tax Depreciation & Deferred Taxes
JOB SUMMARY:
The primary responsibilities of this position are (a) the preparation of tax depreciation and other property-related components of the federal and state income tax returns and quarterly payment estimates for major subsidiaries of The Southern Company; and (b) the calculation of deferred tax data for financial accounting purposes. Other responsibilities are listed below.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
BS in Accounting or Finance required
CPA highly preferred
Must have a minimum of 3 years of Accounting or Tax experience
Corporate income tax return preparation experience, including working knowledge of code, regulations, and administrative pronouncements
Experience with a regulated utility preferred
Deferred income tax accounting knowledge preferred
Some tax research experience preferred
MS Excel skills required; PowerPlan and PowerTax skills preferred
Ability to apply thorough technical knowledge of income tax returns
Knowledge of electric utility business and regulated accounting preferred.
Strong oral and written communication skills; communicating effectively at all organizational levels with both technical and non-technical employees
MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Prepares depreciation and other property-related Ms for federal and state income tax returns
Prepares depreciation and other property-related Ms for estimates of quarterly payments to the IRS and states
Reconcile fixed asset plant and reserve balances among accounting and tax books
Prepares federal and state deferred income tax actualization data and entries
Prepares federal and state deferred income tax forecasts
Utilizes PowerTax software in all of the above
Researches tax law and determines optimum tax treatment of complex transactions and document conclusions
Assists subsidiaries' tax accounting personnel in identifying and understanding book/tax differences
