Manager, Project Management Support
Job Summary:
The Manager, Project Support leads a talented team of specialists and processors who provide financial and work management support services to engineering and construction capital projects across multiple business units at Southern Company Gas. This position also involves a large degree of leadership and participation in process improvement initiatives, software selection, system migration and/or upgrades, and other tactical or strategic initiatives. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of managing high-performing teams and ensuring efficient handling of large volumes of work.
Functional Expertise:
Leads a team of dedicated professionals, including 2 supervisors and 15 Project processors and specialists, performing a wide array of tasks in support of Engineering & Construction projects for Southern and Mid-Atlantic Operations. Duties range from initial project setup, processing of invoices, booking of assets, financial analysis, back-office support, troubleshooting system issues, etc.
Serves as a Project Support subject matter expert for multiple Southern Company Gas teams and initiatives related to operations standards, procedures, and audits.
Provides representation and leadership on company-wide process and project teams (i.e. Power Plant, ARM Work Management System, Oracle Upgrades, etc.) to ensure that Engineering and Construction project needs are met, and to ensure proper allocation of Project Support resources for project development and testing as required.
Proactively identifies and analyzes opportunities for improvements in how Engineering & Construction projects are set up, approved, scheduled, executed, and placed in service (focused on systems, workflows, financials, invoicing, etc. – not actual engineering and construction activities). Leads and/or participates in the evaluation of new tools and processes.
Ensures timely identification, analysis, and resolution of system issues to ensure seamless operations.
Business Acumen:
Analyzes existing and updated invoicing, asset management and other back-office related processes and develops solutions to ensure proper accounting and allocation of costs and assets.
Evaluates contractor invoice aging results to determine and address root causes of payment delays and to ensure that contractors are compensated according to contract terms.
Develops and tracks the budget for the Project Support team.
Develops and documents project and business processes and standards using defined methodologies.

Cultivating an environment that encourages cross-functional collaboration, delivering effective support to internal and external customers, and further developing your team.
Collaborates with various Southern Company Gas departments across all 4 local distribution companies to drive project related process and system improvements.
Manages staff selection, development, and retention. Establishes and monitors work goals and objectives, coaches staff, provides feedback, and evaluates performance.
Maintains relationships with project leadership at each local distribution company to ensure adherence to project setup, invoice processing, asset management procedures, and other project related activities.
Driving Results:
Provides oversight of multiple construction back-office functions necessary to ensure process and system data integrity.
Monitors project data entry into SCG’s Work Management System, ARM, including creating spot contracts and work requests to ensure timeliness and accuracy of project setup and maintenance.
Ensures that project invoices are processed quickly and accurately and that all assets are booked and/or retired as necessary to ensure proper project accounting.
Ensures timely and proper asset booking, allocation, retirement, and project closeout for capital construction projects at all SCG local distribution companies.
Experience in managing high-volume, high productivity teams.
Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and resolve system issues.
Education, Certifications/Licenses:
Required:
BA/BS Degree, or
High School Diploma or GED and related work experience
Related Work Experience:
Required:
5+ years (with BA/BS degree) of gas or related industry experience and managing people and processes at a senior level, or
7+ years (with High School Diploma or GED) of gas or related industry experience and managing people and processes at a senior level
Preferred:
Familiar with Southern Company Gas’s Work Management System, ARM
Familiar with Southern Company Gas’s construction processes
Engineering or Construction Management Degree
PMP certification

Major MS Office Programs (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) – intermediate proficiency
Preferred:

ARM – intermediate proficiency
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:
Some Travel Required: The incumbent may be required to travel on quarterly basis to multiple locations for meetings. Trips may require air travel and/or overnight stay away from home for one or more nights.
This position occasionally requires prolonged standing or walking
