WORK LOCATION, SCHEDULE, & TRAVEL
This position will be based in either Birmingham, AL or Forest Park, GA (Metro Atlanta).
The role includes a mix of field and office work.
Field work includes site visits to suppliers’ shops and project locations.
Travel is expected approximately 50% of the time, including domestic and occasional international travel.

POSITION SUMMARY
The Quality Specialist will support Southern Company’s Supplier Quality department by providing technical oversight of heavy mechanical fabrication, particularly for boilers and pressure vessels. This role ensures supplier compliance with ASME codes and welding standards, supports inspection planning, and contributes to the quality assurance of Generation and Transmission projects. You will work closely with suppliers, engineers, and procurement teams to ensure high-quality deliverables and continuous improvement.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide subject matter expertise in heavy mechanical fabrication and welding processes.
Review Inspection Test Plans (ITPs) and ensure compliance with project specifications.
Conduct supplier site visits to monitor fabrication quality and welding practices.
Evaluate supplier adherence to ASME Code requirements (Sections I, VIII, IX, and B31.1).
Support Engineering and Procurement teams in supplier selection and performance evaluation.
Track and resolve quality issues, including root cause analysis and corrective actions.
Hire and manage 3rd party inspectors to conduct inspections at supplier facilities.
Maintain documentation and reporting using MS Word and Excel.
Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to drive quality improvements.
Support or lead inspections and audits as needed.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience:
AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) or NBIC Certification.
Hands-on experience in fabrication shops or field erection.
General knowledge of generation plant equipment and systems.
Knowledge of heavy mechanical fabrication for boilers and pressure vessels.
Proficiency in welding processes: GTAW, SMAW, FCAW, SAW.
Familiarity with ASME Code Sections I, VIII, IX, and B31.1.
Ability to review Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs) and add appropriate owner witness and hold points.
Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
