Responsibilities:

Promoting and maintaining quality patient care that promotes safety and well-being of all patients throughout the organization on assigned shift. Plans, directs, and coordinates with Admissions and Bed Control to facilitate flow, providing optimum service to all Piedmont customers. Monitoring bed availability and implementing surge capacity measures as needed. Supervision of the nursing staff and coordination of staffing on a shift-to-shift basis. Is the designated on-site hospital administrator after normal business hours. Responsible for the assessment of all requests for administrator-on-call contact during his/her shift. Responsible for all activities within the hospital in the absence of Administration and/or department directors. Works under the direction of the Administrator on-call to determine the activation of the disaster plan and coordinates related activities. Rounds and maintains open communication with all staff. This position requires a sound knowledge of nursing practice and exceptional leadership abilities.

  • Ensures that care is delivered to each patient in accordance with each hospitals policy/procedures and government regulations.
  • Reviews departmental goals with each patient care director to facilitate the role of clinical expert and consultant.
  • Consults with the nursing resource management/staffing coordinators periodically throughout the shift regarding staffing issues. Determines staffing for the shift based on approved staffing grids. Evaluates department acuity when making staffing decisions. Attends bed court/bed huddle to review all staffing needs with clinical managers and staffing coordinators.
  • Coordinates the transfer of patients to the appropriate unit as needed depending on bed/staff availability.
  • Assists with room assignments for admissions. Coordinates with Admission, Discharge and Transfer nurse the proper placement for patients considering diagnosis, unit census, acuity, and staffing to ensure optimal care.
  • Reviews the staffing requirements based on current nursing care needs and patient acuity. Utilizes Float Pool and Agency personnel as necessary while maintaining awareness of budget/stewardship.
  • Conducts frequent rounds throughout the hospital to ensure appropriate functioning of operations.
  • Function in place of administration during hours when administration is not present; contacts Administrator on Call with any anticipated or actual issues/problems.
  • Schedules surgical cases after hours, initiates on call team(s) for emergencies.
  • Contacts the organ procurement organization in order to satisfy regulatory requirements for the determination of medical suitability for organ, tissue and eye donation; completes certification of referral/request and places same in the EMR.
  • Facilitates Safety huddle on the weekends and holidays when administrator on call is absent.
  • Receives complaints and problems directed to the hospital on evening /night/weekend/holidays and addresses these with the appropriate manager on call. Escalates to Administrator on call as appropriate.
  • Responds to all Code Blue or other emergency codes and assists as necessary.
  • Coordinates the direct care for all inpatients who require a higher level of care when there are no beds available in advanced- care units

Qualifications:

Education
  • Graduate from a nursing program Required
  • Bachelors Degree /Masters degree in Nursing Preferred
Work Experience
  • 3 years of nursing experience in a hospital setting Required
  • Demonstrated clinical competency Required
Licenses and Certifications
  • RN - Registered Nurse - Georgia State Licensure and/or NLC/eNCL Multistate Licensure Required
  • BCLS - Basic Life Support Required
  • ACLS Preferred
  • PALS - Pediatric Advanced Life Support Preferred
  • NRP - Neonatal Resuscitation Preferred
