Towaliga Judicial Circuit – Assistant Public Defender IV


The Towaliga Judicial Circuit is seeking to hire an Assistant Public Defender IV. The Circuit serves Monroe, Butts, and Lamar Counties. This position primarily involves representing indigent clients in criminal matters before Superior Court. Qualified candidates must possess the skills and experience necessary to effectively carry out the duties and responsibilities of the role. Responsibilities include preparing and trying cases, negotiating and entering pleas, conducting legal research, and drafting and presenting complex legal documents such as pleadings and orders. Applicants must demonstrate substantial criminal litigation and jury trial experience serving as Lead Counsel. Candidates must also be in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia and show a strong commitment to indigent defense work.

Description of Duties: The Assistant Public Defender IV will be responsible for providing competent and zealous legal representation and advocacy to indigent clients. An individual holding this position should be prepared to direct subordinate staff engaged in criminal defense, advise and counsel other attorneys as to the case management practices of handling their assigned cases; represent clients in cases including the most serious, legal complex, high-profile and/or significant cases assigned to the office. Perform other duties as required.

Juris Doctorate in a related area from an accredited college or university and license to practice law in the State of Georgia or eligibility to sit for the next Georgia Bar examination followed by Georgia Bar exam passage and licensure to practice law in the State of Georgia within one (1) year of hiring or reciprocity and three (3) years of relevant legal experience; or three (3) years of experience required at the lower-level Attorney 3 (LEP022).
