Job Specific Duties:
- Instructs youth through an evidence-based recreation and leisure program, following an organized agenda that includes monthly activity schedules. Adapts instructional methods and materials to meet varying needs, abilities, and interests of the youth.
- Leads recreational activities with the goals of teaching decision-making, improving physical fitness, offering positive leisure options, and developing social skills. Provides guidance in daily living habits and social routines.
- Supervises part-time recreational workers and ensures consistent service delivery across the facility. Plans and coordinates a comprehensive recreation and leisure program tailored to the facility population. Instructs youth through demonstrations and lectures, maintaining daily documentation in logbooks.
- Estimates and requisitions necessary materials and supplies, conducts quarterly inventories, and manages supply replacement. Participates in recruitment, selection, and communication with HR regarding recreation staff vacancies. Identifies staff development needs and ensures appropriate training.
- Schedules work assignments, sets priorities, and provides direction to Recreation Workers (if applicable). Ensures program compliance with DJJ policies, including services for youth in Isolation or Protective Custody. Develops monthly and out-of-school activity schedules.
- Supports PBIS events, attends required meetings, leads monthly recreation staff meetings, and participates in facility management team meetings to address the needs of special populations. Assists in the facility’s accreditation process related to recreation services, as applicable.
Minimum Qualifications:

Associate degree in area of assignment from an accredited college or university
OR -
One (1) year of experience required at the lower level Practical Instructor 1 (EDT010) or position equivalent
Preferred Qualifications:
Preference will be given to applicants who, in addition to meeting the minimum qualifications, possess two or more of the following:

Bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited college or university

Experience conducting structured recreational activities with the goals of teaching decision-making and improving physical fitness

Experience delivering structured leisure activities focused on teaching social skills
-
Experience working with youth in a secure facility
-
Experience supervising lower-level staff
-
Experience managing a youth-focused recreation and leisure program
Additional Information:
May be required to work some evenings, weekends, and holidays.
