SUMMARY:

  • A Test Engineer E3:TE in TVPD Testing Department provides testing support and independent work for accurate and precise evaluation of vehicles, parts, and/or systems in development to achieve targets of performance, durability, function, and quality for ATV and ROV projects.
  • Can work independently to execute evaluations, and propose updated or original evaluations of vehicles, components, or systems with support as needed from design engineers and with direction from test management.

Typical parts/components that a Test Engineer E2 TVPD validates:

- Welded chassis and/or bolt-on components: steel tubing structure, stamped and welded structures, forgings, cast parts

- All components of suspension and steering system.

- Driver controls such as steering wheels, pedals, levers and switches.

- Plastic body components: injection molded, blow molded, die-cut sheet, etc.

- Seats and ergonomics

Responsibilities

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare and carry out detailed evaluations of prototype vehicles, components, or systems utilizing existing testing protocols, or developing evaluations based on understanding or guidance from other test engineers, design engineers, or analysis of failed components to provide and validate results.
  • Evaluations require: understanding and usage of equipment for: strain measurement, and analysis, vehicle handling and performance equipment: Ex: radar, GPS measurement, vehicle acceleration, displacement and motion equipment, as well as subjective evaluation and explanation of vehicle handling and performance characteristics.
  • Provide mentoring and guidance to E2 test members in test execution, development, and analysis
  • Test systems to be used includes: chassis dynamometer, MTS single axis stroke/displacement systems, MTS vibration shaker, Vehicle Drop Test Machine, Vehicle Impact Machine.
  • Document findings and results from evaluations including: Supportive data presented as analyzed and related to system performance and understanding, Written explanations and summaries for communication in-department understanding, Photo or video documentation
  • Test problem list entry and evaluation for proposed countermeasures
  • Test report generation summarizing results of evaluations in concise and clear explanation for documentation and retention of test results.
  • Problem resolution and countermeasure proposal based on test results when initial evaluations do not perform as desired.
  • Communicate with cross-functional team members for explanation and collaboration on vehicle or component evaluations and results.
  • Provide deliverables on-schedule as directed by management or other engineers.
  • Maintain all equipment to ensure tests can be executed and repair to properly functioning condition, maintenance may be executed by the engineer or oversee a contractor performing the maintenance.

Routine decision-making

  • Independently evaluate test results and determine acceptance or failure.
  • Propose potential countermeasure direction to design based on knowledge and experience
  • Propose evaluation methods to some component or systems that may experience problems in development.
  • Time and task management to meet test schedule requirements and development time-lines.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Extensive knowledge and experience with Yamaha testing methods and development.
  • Focus and expert knowledge of one or more key area(s) of vehicle development: suspension, material strength/analysis, MTS testing etc.
  • Broad skill and usage of Microsoft office applications: Excel, Power Point, Word, Access.
  • Ability to ride or drive off-road vehicles at a high level and evaluate performance to provide direction for meeting vehicle criteria
  • General understanding and capability to navigate with Teamcenter, NX CAD system, 2D drawing understanding
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to apply basic mechanical engineering knowledge to real world vehicle design and evaluation
  • Ability to assemble/disassemble vehicles un-aided to required specifications.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent degree or experience
  • Direct applicable experience either from within Yamaha, or other location documented showing high level capability for an area key to development of off-road vehicles. (preferred)
  • Personal hands-on experience with motorsports background; off-road vehicles, motorcycles, and/or cars, etc. (preferred)
  • 3+ years experience within YMMC development, or other directly applicable development company or background (preferred)
  • Execute 1 PJ lifecycle for full understanding of PJ scope. (preferred)
